A robust procurement strategy that aligns to objectives in food procurement is vital if food procurement is to be carried out effectively. A food strategy should:
- bring together policies on food safety, quality, nutrition, health and education across the organisation whilst embedding sustainable development principles eg local sourcing, fairly traded products, ethical sourcing, food miles, etc.
- be developed in conjunction with key stakeholders eg budget holders, catering, procurement, finance, legal and audit departments, along with any partners in collaborative approaches.
Further information on developing a Procurement Strategy can be found in the General PRP, which is currently under re-development. Links will be provided in due course once it is back online.
Sustainable food procurement can have positive effects on the environment, economy and society.
