The Welsh Government recognises the importance of safe food procurement and wants to ensure that this is reflected in food procurement practices across the public sector. To drive this, the Welsh Government’s Value Wales Policy team has developed this Food PRP providing guidance and advice on food safety and legislation, standard templates and a Food Charter 'Buying Safe Food for the Public Plate: A New Approach to Food Procurement for Wales. For the first time, this sets out the Welsh Government’s aspirations on how food procurement should be conducted within authorities and what we expect from our food suppliers. It is our aim to ensure that both the purchase and supply of food is carried out to the highest standards and in line with best practice, to ensure that safe food is served up on the public plate.
It should be noted however that the role of procurement only plays a small part in ensuring safe food is bought and served up – there is also a responsibility within each authority's catering outlets / kitchens and other areas such as local authority health departments, Food Standards Agency and Welsh Local Government Association to ensure food hygiene and safety in the kitchen is adhered to and food safety legislation is followed.
Include the Wales Food Charter 'Buying Safe Food for the Public Plate: A New Approach to Food Procurement for Wales' in your food tenders and request suppliers adopt its principles.
